ABOUT THE PROJECT
UK garage emerged in the 1990s from clubs, pirate radio stations and record shops across the UK, becoming one of the most influential movements in British dance music culture.
Despite its cultural impact, there is currently no central archive preserving the full story of the scene or the voices of the people who helped shape it.
The UK Garage Archive aims to document and preserve this important part of British music heritage through artist conversations, DJ culture, historical research and documentation of the wider cultural landscape that surrounded the music.
The project explores not only the records themselves, but the communities, spaces and stories that built the movement.
WHAT THE ARCHIVE DOCUMENTS
The archive explores the many elements that formed UK garage culture, including:
• DJs, producers and vocalists
• MC culture and live performance
• Pirate radio stations
• Clubs and rave culture
• Record shops and vinyl history
• Influential records and productions
• Fashion, language and youth culture
By documenting these stories, the archive aims to preserve the cultural history of the scene so it can be understood and appreciated by future generations.
